19 Jul James Square Administrator: What We’re Doing to Ensure Quality Care
Letter to the Editor first published on Syracuse.com: James Square administrator: What we’re doing to ensure quality care on July 17, 2017.
Our administrator, Stan Wojciechowski, sent this letter in response to news coverage in the last few weeks concerning our facility.
To the Editor:
James Square Health and Rehabilitation Centre has been the subject of significant news coverage in recent weeks. This focus is following a period of receivership and management transition at the facility. For any long-term care institution, such circumstances are challenging. This has been true at James Square.
I joined James Square as administrator 10 weeks ago and based a 30-year career in long-term care management in Syracuse and Upstate New York. I see James Square employees, consultants and ownership as an institution committed to providing compassionate care to the community. James Square’s current operators are investing in both quality staff and physical plant and interior improvements. Since becoming administrator, I have been given the resources and tools necessary to enable the delivery of quality care.
James Square has recently recruited a team of high quality nurse managers who are bright, caring and committed to our residents, family members and co-workers. Within the past six weeks, we have brought on a quality assurance nurse as well as a wound care specialist who are closely monitoring resident care. We are also working hard to recognize and support our top performing staff and to recruit additional skilled staff who are prepared to work at the same level of caring.
The James Square Quality Assurance Committee is actively reviewing policies and procedures, as well as care issues, to assure we are consistent with best practices for quality performance improvement. We reinstituted our Family Council to ensure that families are both getting the information they need and have the opportunity to share their input and experiences together. In addition, we are meeting individually with families and residents throughout the facility on a daily basis.
I have high standards of care and am very familiar with state and federal regulatory requirements. My team and I are working every day to ensure those standards and requirements are met. We take pride in the progress that is being made and pledge to continue working to make the quality of life the best it can be for every single resident.
